Meet the Merchant: Alexandra Benas, The Cake Boutique
If you’ve ventured just off Main Street in Mullica Hill, you’ve likely passed the eye-catching shop with its signature bright fuchsia damask accent wall. That’s The Cake Boutique, a one-of-a-kind bakery that’s been sweetening the lives of locals for over 13 years, thanks to the creativity and dedication of Alexandra Benas. Born and raised in Mullica Hill, Alexandra felt a connection to this historic town long before it became “happening.” With deep roots in the community, she’s built a business that embodies both a small-town warmth and big-city flair.
“I always felt something was missing in our little town,” Alexandra says, reflecting on her childhood here. Growing up working in her family’s restaurant, The Harrison House, she discovered her love for being in the kitchen early on. But she also knew she wanted to add a unique artistic touch to everything she did. After culinary school, Alexandra and her father George walked into an over 100-year-old house, and he simply asked her, “Can’t you see a bakery here?” At that moment, her vision for The Cake Boutique began to take shape.
The Cake Boutique was designed to bring the sophistication of a New York City bakery to the charm of Mullica Hill. From scratch-made cupcakes, cookies, and French macarons to the stylish boutique corner where you can find the perfect gift, Alexandra’s shop is not just a bakery—it’s a destination. Her Dubai Chocolate Bars, with flavors ranging from pistachio to Biscoff butter, have even garnered national attention. But for Alexandra, it’s the joy of serving her local community that makes The Cake Boutique truly special.
“It’s incredible to be part of such a tight-knit community,” Alexandra says. “I’ve been able to give back in ways that mean a lot to me, like partnering with Icing Smiles, providing custom cakes for families impacted by chronic illness, and donating to Your Place at The Table’s events.”
Alexandra’s love for Mullica Hill is rooted in her upbringing. Her biggest inspirations were her grandparents, whose stories of perseverance and hard work still influence her today. From her Papou Costa, a WWII veteran who came to America at 16, to her Yiayia Anna, whose final words of “Agape” (love) still echo in Alexandra’s heart, family has always been at the core of everything she does.
When she’s not baking up a storm, Alexandra enjoys spending time with her two Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Lulu and Lola, and constantly redecorating her home, perfecting her personal sanctuary. Like many who call Mullica Hill home, Alexandar finds beauty in the balance of history and modern creativity. Through her business, she’s added her own sweet chapter to Main Street’s story, making it the welcoming place it’s known as today.
Next time you’re in Mullica Hill, be sure to stop by The Cake Boutique and experience Alexandra’s vision firsthand. With every bite, you’ll taste not just her culinary talent but also her deep connection to the town she loves so much.
